Swamp Walk – Fakahatchee Strand Preserve

It was a beautiful sunny and cool day for our November visit to Fakahatchee Strand Preserve. Friends of the Fakahatchee have wonderful volunteers who support this unique Florida State Park. Three of them were with us for our guided tram tour/swamp walk. The history of the park and natural characteristics were enthusiastically shared by our guide, Patrick Higgins. He told interesting stories while we traveled by tram, walked in drier prairie areas and sloshed our way through the swamp. A variety of birds, cypress trees, alligators, orchids, snakes, and more were there to enjoy within the preserve. It was a very fun and educational day. We were able to drive at a slow pace along Jane’s Scenic Drive to view more of the park and plan out hiking options for our next visit. Two volunteers had recently arrived to take on the task of grading the road to improve the drive. We have a gallery with some of our images posted in Photo Galleries. If you are interested in Florida wildlife, this is a great place to visit.
